{"id":79,"date":"2020-09-17T22:39:44","date_gmt":"2020-09-17T21:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/classicalindia.info\/?page_id=79"},"modified":"2020-09-18T00:06:21","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T23:06:21","slug":"vedic-and-pa%e1%b9%87inian-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/classicalindia.info\/?page_id=79","title":{"rendered":"Vedic and P\u0101\u1e47inian Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When the first volume of <em>L\u2019Inde Classique<\/em> appeared in 1949 \u2013 the first part of this volume, fascicule one, had already apeared two years earlier, in 1947 \u2013 it was an unprecedent, innovative work, but it was also already in need of updates in several domains, especially in those of Vedic and P\u0101\u1e47inian studies, which were among Louis Renou\u2019s most preferred domains of research within Indian Studies or Indology. In 1947 itself, Louis Renou had published <em>Les \u00c9coles V\u00e9diques et la Formation du Veda<\/em> (Paris : Imprimerie Nationale), which deals in much more detail with the subject matter of paragraphs 614-616 of <em>L\u2019Inde Classique<\/em>.<sup><a href=\"#footnote_0_79\" id=\"identifier_0_79\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"On the subject of the Vedic schools, several important publications have appeared subsequently, of which we mention here, first, Vedic \u015a\u0101kh\u0101s : past, present, future. Bucarest: Biblioth&egrave;que de Bucarest.\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Louis Renou started to publish, in 1955, his <em>\u00c9tudes v\u00e9diques et p\u0101\u1e47in\u00e9ennes <\/em>(EVP) or <em>Vedic and P\u0101\u1e47inian Studies<\/em>. Subsequent years saw the publication of 14 more volumes \u2013 one volume every year, and in 1960, 1961 and 1964 each time two volumes \u2013 till 1966 (vol. XV), when Louis Renou suddenly passed away on August 18, 1966. Posthumously, two more volumes of <em>\u00c9tudes v\u00e9diques et p\u0101\u1e47in\u00e9ennes<\/em> appeared in 1967 and 1969 (EVP vols. XVI and XVII). From the third volume onward, Renou\u2019s <em>\u00c9tudes v\u00e9diques et p\u0101\u1e47in\u00e9ennes<\/em> contained an annotated translation of the \u1e5agveda which was to a very large part finalized in 1966. The degree of finalization per book of the \u1e5agveda varies between 100 percent (the ninth Ma\u1e47\u1e0dala is completely translated in EVP VIII and IX) and just 51 percent (the tenth Ma\u1e47\u1e0dala).<sup><a href=\"#footnote_1_79\" id=\"identifier_1_79\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Hymns translated and published by Louis Renou elsewhere, for instance in Renou&rsquo;s Hymnes et Pri&egrave;res du Veda, have been counted here as translated. Several untranslated hymns of Ma\u1e47\u1e0dala 10 are nevertheless annotated in EVP.\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to honour Louis Renou and his research in the two domains of Vedic and P\u0101\u1e47inian Studies, a <em>Journ\u00e9e d&#8217;\u00e9tudes v\u00e9diques et p\u0101\u1e47in\u00e9ennes<\/em> was organized on 12 June 2019 by Silvia D&#8217;Intino and Jan E.M.
